Abstract

Background: Thermoregulation is important physiological process that allows vertebrates to exist and flourish across a wide range of habitats, such as desert and those in the poles. The adaptation of thermoregulatory mechanisms is a behavioral, physiological and even a genetic process adapted by the vertebrate species to balance its homeostasis against the dynamic thermal stresses.

Aim: The purpose of the study was to provide a comparative analysis of thermoregulation in animals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish and contrasting and diverging adaptive mechanisms of these means of thermoregulation, which ensure survival in diverse ecological and climatic conditions.

Method: The methodological tool was the comparative review method with synthesis of the data according to the peer-reviewed studies published in 2021-2025. Literature was reviewed to identify the major thermoregulatory adaptations such as, behavioral and physiological changes and molecular alterations. The data were then organized into five theme-wise tables expressing aspects of interspecies variation and evolutionary implications.

Results: It was found that mammals and birds have endothermic mechanisms that involved non-shivering thermogenesis, evaporative cooling, and controlled hypothermia whereas reptiles and amphibians make greater use of behavioral thermoregulation, microhabitat choices, and seasonal dormancy. Fish exhibited both partial endothermic and ectothermic responses with ectothermic responses showing depth selection, synthesis of antifreeze proteins, and heat-shock responses. Comparative studies placed more focus on the evolutionary plasticity across vertebrate classes, with the current genomic studies offering refined understandings on resilience hypothetical of climate-stress.

Conclusion: The kind of adaptive measures taken in thermoregulation in the vertebrates depicts a continuum in the approach of this adaptive technique reflecting the innovations that have evolved to sustain life in a variable circumstance. Knowledge of these processes is important in predicting future species response to global climate change.
