Background: The growing effects of climatic change and the desire of the world to become more environmentally sustainable have led to higher demand of efficient environmental management models. As a globally accepted Environmental Management System (EMS), it is the ISO 14001 that has been being implemented in an attempt to assist organizations in minimizing their effects on environmental changes and even conform to objectives of sustainability. Nevertheless, its real performance in making climate adaptation and sustainable development has not been assessed sufficiently.
Aim: This research intends to compare the effectiveness of ISO 14001 to promote the climate change adaptation measures and envisage the contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the climate change context in different organizational contexts.
Method: There was utilization of mixed-methods research design which involved a survey administered on 200 ISO 14001-certified organizations, quantitatively and a qualitative discussion of 20 environmental managers. They analyzed data obtained through survey by means of descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression modeling, whereas the interview transcripts were subjected to thematic analysis.
Results: The results indicated that there were very positive relationships between ISO 14001 incorporation and key outcomes of climate adaptation practices, SDG-alignment, and resource/waste efficiency. Regression analysis showed that the increase of ISO 14001 integration, managerial commitment, and training of employees on environmental matters had significant prediction finding climate adaptation practices (R 2 = 0.64, p < .001). These findings were supported by thematic analysis where the driving power was shown as risk-based planning and continuous improvement.
Conclusion: The ISO 14001 is a good and practical strategy of improving the environmental practices, organizational robustness, and sustainability alignment. But it only succeeds through depth of implementation, author commitment to it and contextual adjustments.
