Abstract

The world's move towards renewable energy and electrified transport has increased the need for high-performance, reliable, and sustainable energy storage systems. The use of nanotechnology has become a game-changer in this field, enabling absolute control over material properties at the atomic and molecular scales. This paper will provide a detailed overview of advanced nanotechnology methods for next-generation energy storage, including the design, synthesis, and functional integration of nanostructured materials into a variety of storage systems, such as lithium-ion, lithium-sulfur, and solid-state batteries, as well as supercapacitors. We critically review the current advances in nano-engineered electrodes, solid electrolytes and interfacial architectures and their roles in energy density and power capability as well as cycle stability and safety. Special focus is put on the new classes of nanomaterials, namely, two-dimensional materials, nanoporous structures, and hybrid nanocomposites, which would allow the enhancement of ion transport, electron conductivity, and structural integrity. In addition, the paper will discuss the adaptation of nanotechnology to advanced design strategies, such as hierarchical structuring and interface engineering, to address critical limitations in traditional energy storage devices. Along with materials and system-level developments, we write about new applications in electric vehicles, grid-scale energy storage and flexible or wearable electronics, with an emphasis on scalability, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability. Lastly, the challenges that might be present nowadays, including large-scale production, long-term stability, and eco-friendliness, are discussed, and directions for future research are suggested, including the incorporation of scientific methods and artificial intelligence to accelerate materials discovery.
