The growing global demand for energy and the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions have intensified interest in high-performance electrochemical storage systems. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) remain the leading technology due to their high energy density, long cycling life, and adaptability across diverse applications. However, further improvement in capacity, stability, and rate performance is essential to meet future energy requirements. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation electrode materials because of their tunable porosity, structural flexibility, and rich redox activity. This review highlights the evolution of LIB technology and critically examines recent progress in MOF-based anode and cathode materials. Emphasis is placed on their structural advantages, electrochemical behavior, and challenges that must be addressed to unlock their full potential for advanced and sustainable energy storage.
