Abstract

Natural health promoting properties have made herbal teas popular across the world as functional beverages. The corn silk tea is a traditional herbal infusion prepared using the stigma of Zea mays L. that has grown to have a growing nutraceutical interest because of its properties as a dietary supplement. This paper identifies its nutritional quality, phytochemical makeup and its possible health effects. Corn silk tea has flavonoids, phenolic compounds, saponins, and essential minerals, which make it an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Diuretic, antihypertensive, and hypoglycemic effects have been indicated, which promote kidney, cardiovascular, and metabolic health. Corn silk tea has potential as a functional nutraceutical due to its low caloric contents safety and sustainability but there is a need to validate it further in clinical trials.
