Abstract

Fluorescence spectroscopy is a good method when it comes to tracing traces of an analyte because it is a very sensitive or a selective method of analyzing. But standard organic dyes and fluorophores are severely restricted by being low photostable, narrow excitable and photobleached which restrict their general uses in long-lasting and high-resolution applications. A new form, of nanocrystals, quantum dots(QDs) has been found to be an increasingly appealing choice based on distinct optical and electrical characteristics, including broad absorption spectroscopy, size-controllable emission, high quantum yield, and robust photobleaching stability. These characteristics of QDs render it an excellent candidate in optimization of the fluorescence spectroscopy in trace detection on the trace level. Recently-engineered have been demonstrated to be used in numerous applications such as biosensing, medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring and food safety where a very sensitive detection of toxins, pathogens, heavy metals and biomarkers of many types are needed in very sensitive forms. Moreover, surface modification and functionalization schemes have extended the utilization of QDs as well that enable their particular molecular recognition and multiplexed detection. Although they promise, cytotoxicity, prolonged biocompatibility and environmental risk are some of the issues that hinder their adoption on a large scale. To address these issues, current studies are working on safer alternatives (carbon dots and perovskite quantum dots) that may reduce these issues. This review demonstrates the concepts of QD-assisted fluorescence spectroscopy, the latest developments in trace-level detection, the comparative advantages over conventional methods and the new developments on safer and more sustainable nanomaterials. Finally, QDs are a novel instrument in analytical science with high potential in the development of ultra-sensitive detection methods in the medical, environmental, and industrial fields.
