Abstract

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in emerging markets are increasingly confronted with turbulent environments where traditional marketing practices prove insufficient. Entrepreneurial Marketing Orientation (EMO) has been identified as a strategic approach that enables SMEs to leverage innovation, proactiveness, and resource creativity to enhance firm performance. At the same time, digital transformation has become a defining feature of modern business, offering firms new tools for customer engagement, operational agility, and market expansion. This study investigates how digital transformation moderates the relationship between EMO and three dimensions of SME performance—market performance, innovation performance, and export performance. Drawing on data simulated from the context of tourism SMEs in Pakistan and analyzed using structural equation modeling, we find that EMO exerts significant positive effects across all three performance outcomes. More importantly, digital transformation strengthens these effects, with highly digitalized firms deriving greater benefits from entrepreneurial marketing compared to their low-digital counterparts. Multi-group analyses confirm that EMO is a strong driver of performance in digitally mature SMEs, but its influence diminishes sharply in firms with limited technological adoption. These findings extend entrepreneurial marketing theory by incorporating digital maturity as a crucial contingency and provide actionable insights for managers and policymakers. Specifically, they suggest that SMEs should jointly cultivate entrepreneurial marketing practices and digital capabilities to maximize competitiveness. This research contributes to the ongoing dialogue on the integration of entrepreneurial orientation, marketing innovation, and digital transformation in emerging-market SMEs.
