Abstract

Mushrooms can be a nutritional food as well as provide valuable antibacterial, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties. Thus, mushrooms contain bioactive constituents which can be used for prevention and management of multiple health concerns, suggesting mushrooms can be a functional food. The growing developments in agricultural biotechnology present increasingly environmentally sustainable agricultural production systems that induce alternative systems, creating no waste and agricultural methods created. Mushroom production methods have developed as an innovative option to combat the growing challenges of food insecurity and public health issues since fungi use much fewer resources and utilize agricultural byproducts. As the science continues to demonstrate the range of health benefits of mushrooms, including mushrooms into various food systems and agricultural systems will continue to increase around the globe while enhancing human health and environmental sustainability.
