Abstract

Over one billion individuals around the world grapple with obesity, a complex and chronic condition which have reached epidemic proportions and spans across all ages. Obesity was once considered to be mostly untreatable; however, the current medical and scientific advancements have shown that with a multifaceted and continuous approach, obesity can be effectively treated. The science of obesity intertwines with the complex association between hormones, metabolism, and gut microbiome, while psychosocial factors contribute to biased behavioral patterns associated with food and physical activity. In addition to the most recent pharmacological treatment and extreme cases of bariatric surgery, the most effective treatment options for obesity include behavioral, nutritional, and physical activity interventions. There is sufficient evidence, however, on the global impact, lack of advancements and future possibilities of obesity reversal, the biological basis of obesity, psychological and behavioral obesity components, nutrition and physical activity, pharmacological, and surgical options that can be integrated for the treatment of obesity. The integration of biological science with social and psychological support has made the goal of reversing obesity within reach, and has made the task appear less like an unattainable dream.
