Abstract

Urdu ghazal is a broad literary genre in terms of its themes, symbols, and metaphors. In traditional ghazals, elements of nature such as flowers, gardens, spring, desert, rain, moon, stars, rivers, and wind were used only to express beauty or love, but in modern times, these elements have taken on new meanings in the context of environmental criticism. Eco criticism is the study of literature that examines the relationship between man and nature, environmental problems, the destruction of natural resources, and human behavior. Although there is little direct tradition of environmental awareness in Urdu ghazals, modern poets have made the destruction of nature, pollution, artificial life, and human indifference the subject of their poetry. In classical Urdu ghazals, poets like Meer, Ghalib, and Momin presented nature in an aesthetic way. In Mir's case, barren gardens and autumn symbolize human tragedy, while in Ghalib's case, the cosmic vastness and the mystery of nature are prominent. In this era, nature was the interpreter of human emotions. In the context of environmental criticism, Urdu ghazals make it clear that man is losing his spiritual and cultural identity by separating himself from nature. The destruction of the garden in the ghazal is not just a scene but a symbol of the decline of human values. Modern poets do not consider nature as a mere backdrop but consider it as a fundamental part of human life. In short, environmental criticism in Urdu ghazals is an emerging trend that looks at the relationship between nature and man from new angles. This trend does not limit literature to aesthetics alone but also provides social and environmental awareness.
