Abstract

The present study is the postmodernist analysis of Samuel Beckett’s play, Waiting for Godot.  The postmodernism features including fragmentation, minimalism, maximalism, truth versus reality and temporal distortion are emphasized. Through the textual analysis the present research examines the experiences of Vladimir and Estrogon. The study reveals that the play reflects major characteristics of postmodern theory through its non-linear narration, minimal setting, the inadequate development of plot and the repetitive routine of characters. The ambiguity of the mysterious Godot, the meaningless activities and instable language of the characters further demonstrate the crisis of human identity, and the absence of absolute truth. The present study concludes that Beckett’s play is one of the significant postmodern texts that continues to influence the contemporary literature.
