Abstract

Plant diseases caused by diverse pathogens significantly threaten global crop productivity and food security, necessitating a deeper understanding of plant–pathogen interactions and the development of sustainable management strategies. This study investigated the molecular and biochemical mechanisms of disease resistance in crop plants, along with the evaluation of eco-friendly control approaches. Pathogens including Fusarium spp., Alternaria spp., and Pseudomonas syringae were isolated and identified using morphological and molecular techniques. Comparative analysis between resistant and susceptible cultivars revealed significant differences in disease severity and defense responses.

Gene expression profiling demonstrated the upregulation of key defense-related genes, such as PR1, PR2, and PR5, particularly in resistant plants, indicating the activation of systemic acquired resistance pathways. Biochemical assays further supported these findings, showing increased activities of antioxidant enzymes and accumulation of phenolic compounds. Sustainable disease management strategies, including biological control agents and plant extracts, effectively reduced disease incidence, with integrated approaches showing the highest efficiency.

Overall, the study emphasizes the importance of combining molecular insights with sustainable agricultural practices to enhance crop resistance, reduce reliance on chemical pesticides, and promote environmentally sound disease management systems.
