Abstract

Contemporary debates on gender are often framed within two opposing paradigms: the Western notion of gender equality, frequently interpreted as sameness, and a culturally influenced perception within some Muslim societies that assumes male superiority over women. Both paradigms, however, fail to capture the nuanced and comprehensive framework presented by Islam. This article argues that Islam offers a distinct model rooted in justice (‘adl), which affirms the spiritual and moral equality of men and women while recognizing natural distinctions that result in complementary roles. Through a critical engagement with Qur’anic discourse, Prophetic traditions, and evidence from early Islamic history, this study demonstrates that Islam neither promotes uniformity nor hierarchy but establishes a balanced system of dignity, responsibility, and social harmony. The article further contends that the Islamic framework provides a coherent and intellectually defensible alternative to contemporary gender debates.
