The rapid advancement of precision agriculture technologies has resulted in the generation of large volumes of heterogeneous and multimodal agricultural data, creating a growing need for advanced learning frameworks capable of transforming raw data into actionable decision support. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of recent developments in deep learning for precision agriculture by synthesizing insights from more than 220 peer-reviewed studies published between 2018 and 2025. The paper traces the evolution of deep learning architectures from early convolutional neural network (CNN) models designed for plant-level perception tasks to more advanced transformer-based and multimodal frameworks capable of large-scale environmental modeling and predictive analytics. Beyond summarizing reported performance improvements across key agricultural applications, the review critically examines practical deployment challenges, including domain generalization limitations, data imbalance, computational constraints, and the interpretability gap associated with complex deep learning models. In addition, emerging research frontiers such as explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), edge intelligence, federated learning, and agricultural digital twin technologies are discussed as potential pathways for overcoming current limitations. Finally, the paper proposes a research roadmap aimed at developing scalable, reliable, and trustworthy AI-driven agricultural systems that can support sustainable crop management and resilient food production in the face of increasing climate and resource pressures.
