Medicinal Plants Modulating Thyroid Hormone Regulation and Therapeutic Management of Thyroid Disorders

Abstract

The mortality rate of patients with thyroid cancer is not decreasing significantly in spite of earlier diagnosis and treatment. Risk factors for thyroid cancer are medical radiations and environmental carcinogens. There are several drugs that are used in the treatment of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism and improve symptoms in hypo and hyperthyroid patients. The present work constitutes a review of the therapeutic strategies as well as biosynthesis of thyroid hormones, causes, symptoms, and treatment of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. We have discussed thyroid hormones and its analogues, radioactive iodides and medicinal plants which are used to treat thyroid related disorders. Drugs listed have potential activity and may aid the physician in the treatment of thyroid hormone problems.
