Artificial intelligence (AI) has become central to digital marketing, allowing firms to deliver highly personalized messages, recommendations and offers at scale. For emerging digital businesses, AI-driven personalization is often a key strategy for gaining visibility, attracting customers and building long-term relationships. However, the intensive use of consumer data also raises issues of privacy, fairness and perceived manipulation, which can weaken consumer trust and damage brand loyalty. This qualitative paper explores how AI-driven marketing personalization influences consumer trust and brand loyalty in the context of emerging digital businesses. Drawing on recent empirical studies and conceptual work published between 2015 and 2025, the paper uses thematic analysis to identify four main themes: (1) personalization as relevance and value co-creation; (2) the double-edged nature of AI, where convenience coexists with surveillance concerns; (3) the importance of transparency, control and ethical AI for building trust; and (4) the role of AI-mediated experiences in strengthening or weakening brand loyalty. The paper concludes that AI-driven personalization can support both trust and loyalty when it is clearly value-adding, transparent and respectful of user autonomy, but can undermine them when perceived as intrusive, unfair or manipulative. Managerial implications and directions for future research are also discussed (Ahmed, 2025; Alhitmi, 2024; Markou, 2025).
